The market is holding firm as February Future and Options series starts. The Nifty is up 36.55 points or 0.5 percent at 7461.20 and the Sensex is up 106.08 points or 0.4 percent at 24575.65. About 986 shares have advanced, 698 shares declined, and 89 shares are unchanged. 

Coal India, GAIL, Sun Pharma, ONGC and HDFC are top gainers while ICICI Bank, SBI, Axis Bank, Maruti and Bharti Airtel are down.

The market continued to be under selling pressure in morning trade following global weakness. All sectoral indices traded in red with the Nifty Energy, Bank and Metal falling more than 2 percent.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 379.90 points or 1.55 percent to 24099.94 and the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 118.10 points or 1.59 percent to 7317. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices lost more than 1.6 percent.

The Indian rupee on Tuesday weakened against the US dollar, after local equity markets fell over 140 points ahead of data on industrial output and retail inflation, expected after market hours.

The rupee closed at 66.87 a dollar, down 0.09% from its previous close of 66.81. The local currency opened at 66.83 a dollar and touched a low of 66.97—a level last seen on 15 December. The rupee has fallen 6.54% during this fiscal year.

NS Venkatesh of IDBI Bank said, "The rupee traded in a narrow range against the dollar yesterday and erased the gains made in the earlier part of trade due to purchase by the custodial banks."

"The USD-INR pair will take cues from the equity market and is expected to trade between 66.50-66.65/USD today," he added.

The US dollar gained against major world currencies to hit its highest in a month. The euro was weaker near 1.07, its lowest in a month.

The Indian equity market is expected to open in the green today with the SGX Nifty, an indicator of the market opening, trading at 7830.50, up 28.50 points at 7:40.

The first day of the week saw equity benchmarks crashing more than 2 percent following steep correction in Chinese markets on slowdown fears and geopolitical tensions. All sectoral indices ended in red. The broader markets were also under pressure.

The 30-share BSE Sensex plunged 537.55 points or 2.05 percent to 25623.35 and the 50-share NSE Nifty lost 171.90 points or 2.16 percent to 7791.30

Asian markets recovered from Monday's sharp selloff while Chinese markets tumbled at opening before quickly erasing early losses. The Shanghai Composite fell 3.1 percent before gaining 0.95 percent.
